The Sparkassen-Café was developed and designed for the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe, one of the three main sponsors of documenta X. Throughout the 100-day art exhibition, the café offered visitors a place to rest and relax in the midst of the busy exhibition activities.
Referencing discussions in art about images and representations, the inside of an old bellows camera – with folded walls and projection area – was recreated.
Filled with visitors, the “camera” showed what was going on on Treppenstrasse – live and upside down – during the day, in the evenings various artistic installations could be seen. Suspended UFO lamps provided indirect lighting.
